ADDIE overview

Learning goal

Use ADDIE as a checklist, not a waterfall.

Estimated time

30 minutes · self-paced

Warm-up

What happens to a project when analysis is skipped?

Main lesson

The five phases

timeline

Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation. Every model you meet later is a remix of these.

  • Analysis — what is the problem, who are the people?
  • Design — objectives, structure, assessment strategy
  • Development — build and test
  • Implementation — launch, comms, support
  • Evaluation — did behaviour change?

Iterative in real life

Modern teams loop: prototype early, test with 3 learners, revise. SAM and Agile-ID are iteration-first versions of the same phases.

Where beginners fail

Jumping to Development. If you cannot state the performance goal, you are not ready to build.

Examples from practice

  • A 4-week project timeline mapped onto ADDIE with two prototype checkpoints.

Interactive quiz

In which ADDIE phase do you define learning objectives?
What is the main critique of classic ADDIE?

Reflection

Which phase do you think you'll be tempted to rush?

Daily challenge

Sketch a one-page ADDIE plan for a fictional 'new expense system' rollout.

Portfolio task

Store the ADDIE plan as your first process artefact.
