Bloom's Taxonomy

Learning goal

Choose the right cognitive level for a task and pick matching verbs.

Estimated time

25 minutes · self-paced

Warm-up

Is 'understand the policy' something you can observe?

Main lesson

Six levels

diagram

Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyse, Evaluate, Create. Most workplace training over-uses the bottom two.

Verbs are commitments

The verb you pick determines the activity and the assessment. 'List' means a recall check; 'evaluate' means a judgement task with a scenario.

  • Remember → list, name, identify
  • Apply → use, demonstrate, complete
  • Analyse → compare, diagnose, differentiate
  • Evaluate → justify, prioritise, critique

Match level to the job

example

Ask what the person must do at work. If they must decide, do not test them on definitions.

Examples from practice

  • 'Understand fire safety' → 'Evacuate the building using the nearest safe route'.

Interactive quiz

'Diagnose why a customer complaint escalated' sits at which level?
