Desirable difficulties

Learning goal

Tell the difference between productive struggle and bad design.

Estimated time

25 minutes · self-paced

Warm-up

Can learning be too easy?

Main lesson

Productive vs pointless difficulty

diagram

Desirable difficulties slow performance during learning but improve retention and transfer. Confusing navigation is not a desirable difficulty.

  • Desirable: spacing, interleaving, retrieval, generation, varied contexts
  • Undesirable: unclear instructions, hidden buttons, jargon, broken links

Generation effect

Ask learners to attempt an answer before showing the model answer — even a wrong attempt improves later learning.

Fluency illusion

example

Smooth videos feel like learning. Measure with delayed retrieval, not with 'I understood it'.

Examples from practice

  • Asking learners to guess the policy limit before revealing it.

Interactive quiz

Which is a desirable difficulty?

Reflection

Where have you confused 'this felt easy' with 'I learned this'?

Daily challenge

Add a 'predict first' step to an existing explanation.

Portfolio task

Note the change and your rationale in the design decisions log.
