Day 35 / 60Week 4 · Instructional Design ProcessLesson

Assessments

Learning goal

Build assessments that predict on-the-job performance.

Estimated time

30 minutes · self-paced

Warm-up

Would passing your quiz prove someone can do the job?

Main lesson

Match the assessment to the objective

diagram

Recall objectives get recall items; decision objectives get scenarios; procedural objectives get simulations or observation checklists.

Writing better items

One clear stem, plausible distractors, no 'all of the above', no trick wording, no negative phrasing.

  • Test judgement, not reading comprehension
  • Use realistic artefacts (emails, tickets, forms)
  • Explain in feedback why each option fails

Beyond the module

example

Observation checklists and manager sign-off are often stronger evidence than any quiz score.

Examples from practice

  • Replacing a 10-question recall quiz with two realistic decision tasks.

Interactive quiz

Objective: 'decide whether to escalate a complaint'. Best assessment?

Reflection

What percentage of quizzes you've taken tested real capability?

Daily challenge

Write one scenario-based assessment item with full feedback for each option.

Portfolio task

Add the assessment items to Project 4.
